Cate is a recent graduate of the U of O, with a degree in Theater and History. Though this is her first show at Lane, the experience has been amazing. Other memorable roles include Constanze in Amadeus (VLT), Cinderella in Into The Woods (VLT), Chris Gorman in Rumors (U of O), and Louise in The Underpants (ACE). Cate’s plans for the future include moving to do professional theater and becoming the next Martha Stewart, only better!
Ruby by the River
Playing November 9-11, 16 and 18 in the Blue Door Theatre.
Intended for Mature Audiences Only!
(Contains strong language, partial nudity, scenes of sexuality and substance abuse)
Local actor/writer/director Richard Leebrick first penned Ruby by the River in the early 90's in a scene writing class at LCC under the tutelage of Jerry Seifert. Some fifteen years later, this November, Mr. Leebrick's vision will be presented by S.P.A. (Student Productions) at Lane's Blue Door Theatre. Under the direction of fellow Eugene actor/director and Lane theatre student Benjamin Newman, Ruby is an ever-evolving student-written/student-directed workshop collaboration of exploration and experimentation.
Mr. Newman calls Ruby by the River a piece about “Anger and tragedy… a truly amazing work with many a moment of love and pain within its folds… a work of daring, a unique world swirling about with ghosts and spirits, drugs and sex, strong poets and damaged souls… a thing of beauty. Real. True. Pure.”
Mr. Leebrick warns, “Ruby has haunted me for years now-since the early '90s… The world of this play, the imagery, language and people have been distilled from actual experience. The fantastic and the prosaic are close neighbors in this world. The grotesque and the picturesque are kissin’ cousins.”

Johnny Ormsbee

Jun Ogura
Jun’s previous roles include a bus driver in Word On The Bus (Spring Inspirations ’05) and a doctor in In The Waiting Room (Spring Inspirations ’06). Chip feels privileged to start off his theater career here at Lane Community College with the talented director Benjamin Newman. Chip just graduated from a “leading role” year at South Eugene High School, where he played the memorable roles of Officer Lockstock in Urinetown: The Musical and Romeo in Romeo & Juliet. Chip was last seen on the LCC Main Stage in Kiss Me Kate as Paul with Lane Summer Musical Theater. Chip would like to thank the cast and crew for being like siblings he’s never had: “I truly love them”; his mom for standing by him: “I’ll love you more than you you’ll ever know”; and to Ben for trusting him with his heart and soul: “I love you Ben.” He adds, “Thank you for coming, and enjoy the show.”

You may have seen Maranda in the role of Katie in In The Waiting Room (Spring Inspirations ’06) at LCC. She also appeared in Lavatorial Love and Smoke Break (Spring Inspirations ’05). She would like to thank everyone involved with making Ruby By The River. “It’s been an awesome experience, and I hope you enjoy the show”.
Lindy has been involved in many school plays and Broadway revues throughout her young life. She spent one year with the Vancouver Children’s Theater and one summer with the Metro Performing Arts in Portland, OR. Lindy has been a member of the Lane Dance Company since Fall 2005. This is her first appearance in a play here at LCC.
Barbie Wu, George Morse,
Ruby By The River is going to be Barbie’s last full production before she heads back to her home land of Taiwan. She’ll make one last appearance on the Blue Door stage, in the upcoming Shakespeare Showcase. Being involved and “living” with the Theater (SPA) has been the most wonderful thing in Barbie’s life. Wu cannot thank everyone here at LCC enough. “Love you all. Peace out”.
George has been a member of Eugene’s theater community for many years. However, this is his first production here at Lane Community College. He is very excited to be participating in this new experimental piece. George will next be appearing in LCC’s production of Othello.

Director
Benjamin Newman

An aspiring actor/writer/director of stage and screen since the age of three, Ben has been working and performing in Eugene for most of his life. He is currently taking a break from his education after studying for three years at New York University in the Experimental Theatre Wing. He cut his teeth there working on smaller shows, creating the original pieces Boy Meets Girls and Man I Am, and collaborating on The Ad/Diction Project, a study of consumerism and consumption—a version of which toured various college campuses, including the University of Oregon. Ben’s last directing project was the smash hit experimental production of Lanford Wilson’s Balm in Gilead, a play that he also produced for his own production company Groove Entertainment. The play, which opened at the Lord Leebrick in the Summer of 2003, opened to rave reviews and played to sold-out houses. Other directing projects have included Joe Orton’s What the Butler Saw, Christopher Durang’s The Marriage of Bette & Boo, and his own original piece Afraid Of Worms (all performed at the Actors Cabaret of Eugene).
Working on this production has been a monumental challenge, taking an original work that has never been produced, assembling a large ensemble, and creating a world from the bottom up. The results have been extremely rewarding. “Without a doubt, this has been one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had. I am forever in debt to this great cast and crew who have succeeded in bringing my vision, and the vision we created together, to life.”
