Notes from the Director

It has been my pleasure to direct Lanford Wilson's Hot L Baltimore with such an incredibly talented cast. Normally, this is the place where I would tell you a little bit about the story of the play but I think you'll be able to figure it out for yourself. I want to talk about the SPA organization and my association with it since its inception.

Over the years, I have worked with many students in a variety of capacities, from director to actor to producer. I am constantly amazed at the energy and dedication that these students from various graduating classes have brought to this organization. In this arrangement, the students provide all of the work that is required to put on a play, from building the sets to making and designing the costumes, to hanging the lights, to putting up the posters.

One example I can offer is the understudies, Eli Moroney and Chaz King, who have filled in for several roles during rehearsals when others have been missing or unavailable. They have done more than just carry the script in their hands, they have taken the words to heart and given a complete portrayal when called upon. This has allowed us to continue to rehearse without interruption, keeping the momentum of the show going. They do this knowing that there is very little chance they will ever be on stage during the run of the show, but that does not prevent them from giving all of themselves to the characters they are interpreting.

Let us not forget the students who work behind the scenes on the crew. They are also essential to this production and to SPA as an organization. They give up their free time so that they can perform the duties necessary for the show to go on every night.

It is my sincere hope that this show will meet your expectations and you will get to see just how truly talented all of the students are in this production. I look forward to rehearsal everyday because it is another chance to spend some time with them, to have a few laughs, and make a little magic.
